Suramadu Bridge

The Suramadu Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge connecting Surabaya on Java to Bangkalan on Madura Island. Opened in June 2009, it is the longest bridge in Indonesia and the second-longest in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching 5.4 kilometers across the Madura Strait. It was the first bridge to cross this strait.

• The bridge has a dedicated lane for motorcycles in each direction.
• Tolls were abolished for all vehicles starting 27 October 2018, so crossing is free.

A bit of history

The idea for the bridge was first proposed in the early 1960s by Indonesian engineer Professor Sedyatmo. After renewed interest in the mid-1980s, a pre-feasibility study was conducted in 1990. Construction began in August 2003 but was halted in 2004 due to a girder collapse that killed one worker and injured nine, and later due to lack of funds. Work restarted in November 2005, and the main span was connected on 31 March 2009. The bridge opened to the public on 10 June 2009.
