Located on Jalan Imam Bonjol in Central Jakarta, the Museum of the Declaration of Independence (Museum Perumusan Naskah Proklamasi) occupies a colonial-era building that once belonged to Japanese Rear Admiral Tadashi Maeda. It was here, in the early hours of August 17, 1945, that Indonesia's founding fathers, Sukarno and Hatta, drafted the text of the Proclamation of Independence. The museum preserves the room where the historic document was written, complete with original furniture, typewriters, and personal effects. Exhibits include photographs, documents, and dioramas that narrate the events leading up to the proclamation. The building itself is a fine example of 1920s Dutch colonial architecture, with high ceilings and shuttered windows. A visit offers a poignant glimpse into a pivotal moment in Indonesian history, set in a quiet, reflective space away from the city's bustle.
