Jam Gadang stands as Bukittinggi's most recognizable landmark, a towering clock tower built in 1926 by order of the Dutch queen. The structure's roof has evolved over time: originally topped with a Dutch-style dome, it was replaced with a Japanese-style pagoda during the occupation, and later with a traditional Minangkabau gonjong roof. Visitors gather at the base to admire the architecture, take photos, and enjoy the lively square, which is a hub for local events and street food. The clock's four faces are a notable feature, though the mechanism is no longer original.

Don't miss

  • Observe the three distinct roof styles reflecting colonial, Japanese, and Minangkabau influences.
  • Watch the clock strike the hour from the surrounding park.
  • Explore the nearby market and sample local snacks like sate padang.
