Parvati Hill

Parvati Hill is a hillock in Pune, India, rising to 2,100 feet (640 m) above sea level. Atop it is the Parvati Temple, the oldest heritage structure in Pune, built during the Peshwa dynasty. It also serves as an observation point offering a panoramic view of the city and is the second highest point in Pune.

• The hill has 108 steps to reach the top.
• The Peshwa Museum is located atop the hill, displaying artifacts from the Peshwa period.
• Five temples are atop the hill: Devdeveshwar, Kartikeya, Vishnu, Vitthal, and Rama, plus temples of Surya and Bhawani.

A bit of history

The hill was originally owned by a Patil named Taware. The Peshwa purchased it to build a Shiva temple. The Devi temple was believed to be Taware's kulswami, whose angara cured a leg ailment of Kashibai, mother of Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao, prompting the Peshwa to build a temple complex. The main Devdeveshwara temple, made of blackstone, was completed under Balaji Baji Rao in 1749, with a gold pinnacle added in 1760.
