Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most prominent and bustling ghat in Varanasi, stretching along the Ganges. Its name derives from the legend that Lord Brahma performed ten horse sacrifices here. The ghat is a hive of activity: pilgrims bathe, priests perform rituals, boatmen offer rides, and vendors sell flowers and lamps. The highlight is the daily Ganga Aarti at sunset, a mesmerizing spectacle of synchronized fire offerings, chanting, and incense. Priests in saffron robes wave flaming lamps to the rhythm of hymns, while thousands gather on steps and boats. The ghat is also a starting point for boat trips along the river.

Don't miss

  • Attend the evening Ganga Aarti, a dramatic ritual with fire, music, and devotion.
  • Take a sunrise boat ride to see the ghats and the river come alive with bathers and worshippers.
  • Explore the nearby markets and alleys for local crafts, silk, and street food.
