The Chaukhandi Stupa is a significant Buddhist monument in Sarnath, just outside Varanasi. It commemorates the spot where Lord Buddha, after his enlightenment, encountered his first five disciples and delivered his first sermon. The stupa's name comes from its four-armed (chaukhandi) plan, though it now features an octagonal Mughal-era tower built by Govardhan, a son of Raja Todar Mal, to honor Emperor Akbar's visit. Visitors can climb the base for a panoramic view of the surrounding gardens and see the brickwork that reveals layers of history from the Gupta period onward.

Don't miss

  • Climb the steps of the stupa's base for a panoramic view of Sarnath's green landscape.
  • Examine the brick architecture, which shows both ancient Buddhist and later Mughal influences.
  • Walk around the peaceful garden grounds, dotted with other small stupa ruins and flowering trees.
