Jantar Mantar in Ujjain is one of five observatories constructed by the Rajput king Jai Singh II in the 18th century. Unlike modern observatories, this site uses massive, geometrically carved stone structures to measure time, predict eclipses, and track star positions. Visitors can walk among instruments like the Samrat Yantra (a giant sundial) and the Nadivalaya Yantra, which depict the Earth's rotation. The site offers a hands-on glimpse into ancient Indian astronomy, where the sky was mapped without telescopes. It's a quiet, thought-provoking space that blends science, history, and architecture.
Don't miss
- The Samrat Yantra, a 70-foot-tall sundial that tells time to within two seconds
- The Nadivalaya Yantra, a pair of hemispherical bowls that simulate the celestial sphere
- The Digamsha Yantra, used to measure azimuth and altitude of stars
