The Amritaghateswarar-Abirami Temple, dating back over 1,000 years, is a major pilgrimage site in Thirukkadaiyur. The temple's name derives from the legend that Shiva broke a pot of nectar here, and its towering gopuram is adorned with intricate sculptures. Devotees come to seek blessings for longevity and marital harmony, especially during the annual Brahmotsavam festival. Inside, the sanctum houses a Shiva lingam, while the shrine to Abirami features exquisite Chola-era bronze work. The temple tank, known as the Potramarai Kulam, adds to the serene atmosphere.
Don't miss
- Admire the 11th-century Chola-era bronze statues of Shiva and Parvati.
- Witness the annual chariot festival (Brahmotsavam) in April/May.
- Circumambulate the temple tank, believed to have healing waters.
