Gyanvapi Mosque stands next to the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, built in 1669 by Emperor Aurangzeb after demolishing an earlier temple. The mosque's name means 'Well of Knowledge,' referencing a well within the complex. Its architecture features a large courtyard, a prayer hall with seven arched niches, and two minarets (one partially standing). The site is a focal point of religious and historical tension, yet it draws visitors for its intricate Mughal design and proximity to the temple. Non-Muslims can view the exterior but entry is restricted.

Don't miss

  • Observe the intricate Mughal arches and calligraphy on the mosque's facade
  • See the Gyanvapi well, which gives the mosque its name
  • View the mosque from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple complex for a unique perspective
