Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a vast rectangular tank covering several acres, with a small temple dedicated to Mariamman on an island at its center. The tank is fed by an underground channel from the Vaigai River. During the annual float festival in January or February, the deity is taken on a decorated raft across the illuminated waters, attracting huge crowds. At other times, the tank is often dry, revealing its stepped banks and the central mandapa.
Don't miss
- Walk down the stone steps to the tank floor when dry to appreciate its scale.
- Visit during the float festival to see the temple raft and night illuminations.
- Explore the small central shrine dedicated to Mariamman, accessible by bridge.
