Koodal Azhagar Temple in central Madurai is dedicated to Vishnu, who is depicted here in three forms: seated, standing, and reclining. The temple's gopuram and inner halls are covered with detailed carvings of mythological scenes. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, sacred sites sung by the Alvar saints. Visitors can walk through the pillared corridors and admire the distinct iconography, especially the rare reclining Vishnu image.

Don't miss

  • See the rare triple-form Vishnu icon: seated, standing, and reclining.
  • Admire the intricate stone carvings on pillars and ceilings depicting Vishnu's avatars.
  • Wander through the peaceful inner courtyard away from the city noise.
