Sujata Stupa is a modest brick-and-plaster mound located in the village of Bakraur, just across the Phalgu River from Bodh Gaya. It commemorates the offering of kheer (milk-rice) by the village woman Sujata to the ascetic Siddhartha, which gave him strength to meditate and attain enlightenment. Visitors see a restored stupa with a small shrine, surrounded by rural fields. The site offers a quieter, more reflective experience compared to the bustling Mahabodhi Temple, and is a poignant reminder of the human kindness that preceded the Buddha's awakening.

Don't miss

  • Climb the stupa platform for views of the surrounding countryside and the distant Mahabodhi Temple spire.
  • Visit the adjacent Sujata Temple, a small modern shrine honoring the donor.
  • Walk the path from Bakraur village to the stupa, imagining Sujata's journey with her offering.
