The Chennakeshava Temple in Belur is a pinnacle of Hoysala architecture, built in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana. Visitors are awed by the star-shaped platform, intricate friezes, and over 40,000 sculptures, including the iconic bracket figures (madanikas) in graceful poses. The temple's sanctum houses a 6-foot-tall image of Lord Krishna, while the exterior walls tell stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The craftsmanship in soapstone, with its fine detailing and polished finish, reflects the zenith of medieval Indian artistry.
