The Allahabad Pillar is a polished sandstone monolith erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, now located inside Allahabad Fort. It bears six edicts of Ashoka promoting dharma and non-violence, as well as later inscriptions by Samudragupta detailing his conquests. The pillar stands about 35 feet tall and is a rare example of Mauryan artistry. For visitors, it offers a tangible link to ancient India's political and religious history, though access requires entry to the fort.
Don't miss
- Read the Ashokan edicts inscribed in Brahmi script on the pillar
- Decipher Samudragupta's later Sanskrit inscriptions praising his military campaigns
- Observe the pillar's polished surface, a hallmark of Mauryan stonework
