Vestfjarðagöng is a 9.1-kilometer tunnel that opened in 1996, linking the towns of Ísafjörður and Flateyri in the Westfjords. It is one of Iceland's longest tunnels and a key piece of infrastructure, reducing travel time and providing safe passage through the mountainous region. Driving through it is an adventure in itself, with the tunnel's single lane and passing bays requiring patience and cooperation. The tunnel's interior is lit, but the experience is still stark and impressive, highlighting the challenges of Icelandic road engineering.
Don't miss
- Drive the full length to appreciate the scale of this engineering project
- Note the passing bays and pull-offs that allow vehicles to yield
- Look for the informational signs inside that explain the tunnel's history
