The Tokaj wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002, covers 27 villages across the Tokaj-Hegyalja foothills. Its unique volcanic and loess soils, combined with the microclimate from the Tisza and Bodrog rivers, produce the famous sweet Tokaji Aszú and dry Furmint wines. Visitors drive or cycle through terraced vineyards dotted with stone cellars, stopping at family-run wineries for tastings. The landscape is marked by the Kopasz Hill lookout near Tarcal and the historic cellars of Tokaj town. The region's wine classification dates to 1737, predating Bordeaux.
