Santa María volcano towers over Quetzaltenango as one of Guatemala's most active stratovolcanoes. Its massive 1902 eruption was one of the largest of the 20th century, devastating the region. Today, adventurous hikers ascend its slopes through cloud forest and volcanic terrain, rewarded at the summit with sweeping views of the surrounding highlands and neighboring volcanoes like Santiaguito. The hike is strenuous but offers a profound encounter with Guatemala's volcanic landscape.
