The Petén Basin is a geographic lowland covering much of Guatemala's Petén Department, characterized by limestone terrain, seasonal swamps, and lush rainforest. This region was the heartland of the ancient Maya civilization, hosting major cities like Tikal, Uaxactún, and El Mirador. Today, visitors explore towering pyramid temples, carved stelae, and wildlife-rich jungles. The basin's remote nature offers a sense of discovery, with many sites accessible only by foot or small aircraft.

Don't miss

  • Climb Temple IV at Tikal for panoramic views over the rainforest canopy.
  • Hike to El Mirador, home to the massive La Danta pyramid.
  • Spot howler monkeys, toucans, and jaguars in the Maya Biosphere Reserve.
