The Upper Town, known as Ano Poli, is the historic heart of Thessaloniki, perched on a hill above the modern city. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with traditional Macedonian houses, many with wooden balconies and red-tiled roofs. This neighborhood survived the great fire of 1917, preserving its Byzantine and Ottoman character. Visitors can explore hidden courtyards, small churches, and local tavernas. The area offers some of the best views of the city and the Thermaic Gulf, especially from the walls and the Trigonion Tower. It's a peaceful escape from the bustling lower city.

Don't miss

  • The panoramic viewpoint near the Trigonion Tower
  • The Church of Osios David, with its 5th-century mosaic
  • The traditional houses with Ottoman-era architecture along Olympiados Street
