Hagios Demetrios is the largest and most important church in Thessaloniki, dedicated to the city's patron saint. Built in the 7th century on the site of an earlier Roman bath where Saint Demetrios was martyred, the basilica features stunning early Byzantine mosaics depicting the saint and other figures. Visitors can descend into the crypt, which contains the saint's tomb and a small museum with artifacts from the church's history. The church's five-aisled layout and marble columns create a serene, sacred atmosphere.
