The Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia was one of ancient Sparta's most important religious sites, located along the Eurotas River. Today, visitors see the foundations of a temple and a Roman-era amphitheater built over the original altar. This place is infamous for the diamastigosis, a ritual flogging of Spartan boys that tested their endurance and became a tourist spectacle in Roman times. The sanctuary's small on-site museum displays votive offerings, including terracotta masks and lead figurines. Though mostly ruins, the site offers a tangible connection to Sparta's austere and militaristic culture.

Don't miss

  • See the remains of the Roman amphitheater built to accommodate crowds watching the flogging rituals.
  • Examine the collection of terracotta masks and lead votive offerings in the small on-site museum.
  • Stand at the altar where Spartan youths underwent the brutal diamastigosis, a rite of passage.
