Mystras is a remarkably preserved fortified medieval town that served as the last stronghold of the Byzantine Empire. Visitors can explore a labyrinth of cobbled streets, ruined palaces, and monasteries clinging to a steep hillside. The site's crowning glory is the Church of Agios Dimitrios, adorned with vibrant 13th- and 14th-century frescoes. From the upper citadel, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of Sparta and the surrounding olive groves. Unlike many ancient ruins, Mystras feels like a frozen-in-time village, inviting hours of discovery.

Don't miss

  • Admire the intricate frescoes inside the Church of Agios Dimitrios, depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
  • Climb to the Palace of the Despots, a restored Gothic-style palace with exhibits on Byzantine life.
  • Hike up to the upper fortress (Kastro) for breathtaking views over the Eurotas Valley and Taygetus Mountains.
