Perched on a hill overlooking Skiathos, the Evangelistria Monastery was founded in the late 18th century and is renowned for its role in the Greek War of Independence. It was here that the first Greek flag with a white cross on a blue background was blessed and raised in 1807. Visitors can explore the fortified complex, which includes a beautiful church with intricate iconostasis, a small museum displaying religious artifacts and revolutionary memorabilia, and peaceful courtyards. The monastery also produces olive oil and wine, which are available for purchase. The panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea from the monastery grounds are breathtaking.
