From 1834 to 1912, Samos operated as a self-governing principality, with its own flag, coinage, and administration. This period shaped the island's identity, visible in the elegant neoclassical buildings of Samos town (Vathy) and the Archaeological Museum. Visitors can see the Prince's Palace (now the town hall) and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, which reflect European influences. The principality ended with unification with Greece during the Balkan Wars.
