Nea Kameni is the dark, volcanic island at the center of Santorini's caldera, formed by eruptions over the past few millennia. Visitors take a boat tour from Fira or Oia, then hike up a steep, rocky path to the active crater, where steam vents and yellow sulfur deposits create an otherworldly landscape. The hike offers panoramic views of the caldera and surrounding islands. After exploring, boats often stop at nearby Palea Kameni for a swim in the warm, mineral-rich hot springs. This excursion provides a tangible connection to the island's volcanic origins and ongoing geological activity.
