The Minoan eruption, occurring around 1600 BCE, was one of the largest volcanic events in recorded history. It devastated the island of Santorini, creating the current caldera and burying the prosperous Minoan settlement of Akrotiri under layers of pumice and ash. Today, visitors can explore the excavated ruins of Akrotiri, which offer a remarkably preserved glimpse into Bronze Age life, including multi-story buildings, frescoes, and advanced drainage systems.
