The Duchy of the Archipelago was a feudal state established in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, a Venetian nobleman, after the Fourth Crusade. Its capital was Naxos Town, where the imposing Kastro (castle) still stands as a reminder of Venetian rule. The duchy controlled most of the Cyclades until the 16th century. Today, visitors can explore the Kastro’s narrow alleys, Catholic cathedral, and Venetian mansions, as well as the many fortified towers (pyrgoi) scattered across the island, which served as defensive residences for noble families.

Don't miss

  • Wander through the Kastro district in Naxos Town, with its medieval architecture and sea views.
  • Visit the Archaeological Museum housed in a former Venetian school within the Kastro.
  • Spot the distinctive Venetian towers, such as the Tower of Agia, in the countryside.
