Argos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Greece, boasts a wealth of ancient ruins spanning millennia. The star attraction is the well-preserved ancient theater, carved into the hillside and capable of seating 20,000 spectators. Nearby, the Roman agora and baths reveal layers of history. Dominating the skyline is the Larissa fortress, a Byzantine and Venetian castle perched on a hill with panoramic views. Visitors can climb to the fortress for a sweeping vista of the Argolic Gulf and the plain. Argos offers a less crowded alternative to other ancient sites, with a rich tapestry of Greek, Roman, and medieval history.
