The Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia, located on the banks of the Eurotas River, was one of ancient Sparta's most important religious centers. Dedicated to Artemis Orthia, the site features a temple and an altar where rituals, including the notorious endurance test for Spartan boys (the diamastigosis), were performed. Today, visitors can see the foundations of the temple and the remains of the Roman-era theater built around it. The site offers a glimpse into the fierce religious and educational practices that defined Spartan society.
