Nea Kameni is a small, dark volcanic island formed by eruptions over the past few millennia, sitting in the center of Santorini's flooded caldera. Visitors take a short boat trip from Fira or other ports to reach the island, then hike up a rocky path to the crater's edge. The landscape is otherworldly, with black lava rocks, yellow sulfur deposits, and wisps of steam rising from vents. At the top, you can peer into the crater and feel the heat, while enjoying 360-degree views of the caldera and surrounding islands. The hike takes about 30 minutes each way and is moderately strenuous, but the unique geological experience makes it a must-do for active travelers.

Don't miss

  • Stand at the rim of the active crater and see steam vents up close
  • Hike across black lava fields with striking yellow and red mineral deposits
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the caldera, Thirassia, and the Aegean Sea
