The Castle of Akrotiri, also known as Goulas, is a crumbling Venetian fortress perched on a hill overlooking the caldera. Built in the 13th century, it once protected the island from pirates. Today, visitors can wander among the stone walls and arches, imagining medieval life. The real reward is the 360-degree view: the caldera's blue expanse, the white-washed village below, and distant islands. It's a quiet, atmospheric spot, especially at sunset, with fewer tourists than other viewpoints.

Don't miss

  • Climb to the top of the fortress for panoramic views of the caldera and the village of Akrotiri.
  • Explore the remaining stone walls, arches, and a small chapel within the ruins.
  • Photograph the contrast of ancient stone against the vibrant caldera backdrop.
