Akrotiri is a prehistoric Minoan city buried under volcanic ash from the Thera eruption around 1600 BCE, offering a glimpse into ancient life. Excavations revealed well-preserved frescoes, pottery, and sophisticated multi-story buildings with drainage systems. Visitors walk on elevated walkways through the covered archaeological site, viewing the ruins of houses, streets, and public squares. The site's preservation is exceptional, with some buildings still standing two stories high. It provides a fascinating contrast to the volcanic landscape of modern Santorini.
