The Monument of Aemilius Paullus stands near the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, a marble pillar erected by the Roman general after his decisive victory over King Perseus of Macedon at the Battle of Pydna in 168 BCE. The monument originally supported a bronze equestrian statue of Paullus, though only the inscribed base remains today. Visitors can see the Latin inscription detailing his triumph, a rare example of Roman propaganda within the Greek sanctuary. The monument offers a glimpse into the political use of Delphi by foreign powers.

Don't miss

  • Inscribed marble base with Latin text recounting the victory at Pydna
  • Location near the Temple of Apollo, blending Roman and Greek elements
  • Remains of the pillar that once held a bronze equestrian statue
