The Roman Forum of Athens, also known as the Roman Agora, is a fascinating archaeological site located in the Plaka district, just north of the Acropolis. Built between 19 and 11 BC with funds from Julius Caesar and Augustus, it served as the city's main marketplace during Roman times, replacing the older Greek Agora. The site is smaller than its Greek counterpart but offers a more intimate glimpse into daily life under Roman rule. The most prominent structure is the Gate of Athena Archegetis, a marble gateway with four Doric columns, which once marked the entrance. Nearby, the Tower of the Winds, an octagonal marble clocktower, stands as one of the best-preserved ancient timekeeping devices. You can also see the remains of a public latrine, a fountain, and various shops. The site is less crowded than the Acropolis, making it a peaceful spot to wander among the ruins. Informational signs provide context, and the nearby Museum of the Ancient Agora offers additional artifacts.
