The Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaro, is a unique ancient and modern monument: it was originally built in the 4th century BC for the Panathenaic Games, then reconstructed entirely in marble in the 19th century to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Today, visitors can walk through the tunnel used by athletes, stand on the starting lines, and climb the steep marble bleachers that seat up to 50,000 people. The stadium is also the site where the Olympic flame is handed over to each host city, making it a living symbol of the Olympic spirit.

Don't miss

  • Stand on the marble track where the first modern Olympic athletes competed
  • Visit the Olympic Museum inside the stadium, showcasing torches and medals
  • Climb to the top of the bleachers for a view of the entire stadium and the Acropolis beyond
