Paliachora, meaning 'old town,' is the deserted medieval capital of Aegina, built on a steep hill for defense against pirate raids. Founded in the 9th century, it was abandoned in the 19th century after the population moved to the coast. Today, visitors can wander through the ruins of over 30 churches, many with faded frescoes, as well as houses and a Venetian fortress at the summit. The site offers a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere and panoramic views of the island and sea.

Don't miss

  • Climb to the Venetian fortress at the top for commanding views of Aegina and the Saronic Gulf.
  • Explore the remains of dozens of Byzantine churches, some with surviving frescoes and architectural details.
  • Wander through the stone ruins of houses and streets, imagining life in this once-thriving town.
