Perched on a hill about 4 kilometers south of Weimar's center, Schloss Belvedere is a stunning example of Baroque architecture and garden design. Built as a summer residence for Duke Ernst August I, the palace features a symmetrical layout with a central corps de logis flanked by two wings. The interior houses the 'Museum für Kunst des 18. Jahrhunderts' (Museum of 18th-Century Art), showcasing paintings, sculptures, and exquisite porcelain from the ducal collections. The gardens are a highlight: the Baroque parterre with its geometric flower beds, the orangery, and the English landscape park beyond. Visitors can stroll through the manicured hedges, admire the fountains, and enjoy panoramic views of the Thuringian countryside. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions and concerts. A visit combines art, history, and nature in a serene setting.
Don't miss
- The Baroque garden parterre, one of the best-preserved in Germany.
- The Porcelain Cabinet, featuring Meissen and East Asian porcelain.
- The 'Festival Hall' with its ceiling fresco and stucco work.
- The orangery, housing citrus trees in winter and used for events.
- The view from the palace terrace over Weimar and the surrounding hills.
