The Fortress of Ulm is a vast 19th-century military fortification system that encircles the city of Ulm and the neighboring town of Neu-Ulm. Built between 1842 and 1859, it is one of the largest preserved fortress complexes in Europe. The fortress includes numerous bastions, trenches, and underground tunnels, many of which are open to the public. Visitors can explore the Wilhelmsburg fortress, which houses a museum on the history of the fortifications, and walk along the ramparts for panoramic views of Ulm and the Danube. The site also features a sculpture park and hosts events. A visit here provides insight into 19th-century military strategy and engineering, as well as a unique perspective on the city's landscape.
