Speyer's old town (Altstadt) is a charming district that encapsulates the city's 2,000-year history. Cobblestone lanes wind past half-timbered houses, boutique shops, and cozy cafes. The centerpiece is the magnificent Speyer Cathedral (Dom), a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Romanesque church in Europe. The Altstadt also features the Altpörtel (old gate), a medieval tower that once guarded the city, and the historic market square (Marktplatz) with its fountain and town hall. Visitors can explore the Jewish courtyard (Judenhof), remnants of a medieval synagogue, or stroll along the Rhine promenade. The area is pedestrian-friendly, with plenty of restaurants serving regional Palatinate cuisine. Seasonal events, like the Christmas market, add to its appeal.
