St. Wolfgang Church (Wolfgangskirche) is a unique late Gothic church that doubles as a defensive structure, built into Rothenburg's northern fortifications near the Klingentor gate. Constructed around 1475, it served both spiritual and military purposes: its thick walls and elevated position made it a stronghold during sieges. The church's exterior is austere, blending seamlessly with the city wall, but inside it offers a serene, light-filled space with a single nave and a wooden gallery. The altar, dating from the late 15th century, depicts scenes from the life of St. Wolfgang. From the church, you can access the adjacent Klingentor tower and walk along the city wall, gaining a sense of how faith and defense were intertwined in medieval Rothenburg. The church is less visited than the main St. James Church, providing a quieter, more contemplative experience.
