Rothenburg's town walls are among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Germany, encircling the old town for about 2.5 kilometers. Visitors can walk along the covered sentry walkway, which is largely intact and offers a unique perspective of the city's half-timbered houses, gardens, and the Tauber Valley beyond. The walls feature several towers and gates, such as the Rödertor and the Burgtor, each with its own history. The walk is mostly flat and provides a peaceful escape from the busier streets below. Along the way, informational plaques describe the wall's construction and the city's history. The walls were rebuilt after World War II with donations from around the world, and you can see plaques honoring the donors.
Don't miss
- Walking the full circuit of the sentry path (about 2.5 km)
- Views of half-timbered houses and the Tauber Valley
- Historic gates like the Rödertor and Burgtor
