Neuburg Forest is a sprawling woodland located just east of Passau, covering over 1,000 hectares of mixed forest. It is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking hiking, trail running, or simply a peaceful escape into nature. The forest is crisscrossed by a network of well-marked trails that vary in difficulty, leading through dense stands of beech and oak, past small streams, and up to gentle hills with occasional views of the Danube Valley. Wildlife such as deer, foxes, and numerous bird species can be spotted. The forest also contains the ruins of Neuburg Castle, a medieval fortification that adds a historical touch. In autumn, the foliage transforms the landscape into a tapestry of gold and red. Neuburg Forest is less frequented than city parks, offering solitude and a true wilderness experience close to Passau.
