Sennelager is a unique district where military history and natural heathland converge. The Sennelager Training Area, established in the 19th century, is one of the largest military training grounds in Germany, used by the British Army since 1945. The area features vast open heath, pine forests, and rolling sand dunes, creating a landscape that feels remote despite its proximity to Paderborn. Visitors can explore the Senne region's distinctive flora and fauna, including rare bird species and wild ponies. The historic barracks, such as the Athlone Barracks, reflect the area's long military tradition. While access to the training area is restricted during exercises, public footpaths and cycle routes skirt the perimeter, offering glimpses of the heathland and occasional military vehicles. The nearby Sennelager village has a few shops and pubs that cater to the military community.
