St. Lorenz Church (Lorenzkirche) is one of Nuremberg's most impressive medieval structures, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that dominates the southern part of the Old Town. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, the church features two towering spires and a magnificent rose window that glows with color when the sun shines through. Inside, visitors are awed by the soaring vaulted ceilings and an extraordinary collection of late Gothic art, including the famous 'Angelic Salutation' by Veit Stoss and the tabernacle by Adam Kraft. The church was heavily bombed in 1945, but its restoration after the war was a testament to the city's resilience. Today, it serves as an active Lutheran parish church and a major tourist attraction. The peaceful interior offers a respite from the bustling city, and the intricate stone carvings and stained glass windows tell stories of faith and history.

Don't miss

  • Veit Stoss's 'Angelic Salutation' (1517-1519) – a carved wooden altarpiece suspended from the ceiling
  • Adam Kraft's stone tabernacle (1493-1496) – a 20-meter-high Gothic masterpiece
  • The large rose window (14th century) with vibrant stained glass
  • The twin towers (81 meters high) – climbable for panoramic views (check opening times)
  • The original medieval choir stalls with intricate carvings
