Stretching from the city center to the northeastern suburbs, the English Garden is Munich’s green lung, covering over 900 acres, larger than New York’s Central Park. Designed in the 18th century as a public park in the English landscape style, it offers a mix of open meadows, wooded paths, streams, and lakes. The park is a hub of recreational activity: locals sunbathe on the lawns, jog along gravel paths, and play football. The most iconic sight is the Eisbach wave, a standing wave on the man-made Eisbach stream where surfers ride year-round, drawing crowds of spectators. Several beer gardens, including the famous Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower) beer garden, serve traditional Bavarian food and drink under chestnut trees. Other highlights include the Monopteros temple on a hill, the Japanese Teahouse, and the Kleinhesseloher See lake with rowboat rentals. The park is a perfect escape from the city bustle, offering a quintessential Munich experience.
