Rising to 2,196 meters, Große Arnspitze is the highest summit in the Arnspitzen group, straddling the border between Germany and Austria near Mittenwald. This mountain is a magnet for experienced hikers and climbers seeking a demanding ascent with spectacular rewards. The most common route starts from the Leutasch valley, following a steep, rocky trail that requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. Along the way, you'll traverse alpine meadows and scramble over limestone ridges, with the final section involving some exposed climbing. At the top, a 360-degree panorama unfolds: the Karwendel and Wetterstein ranges stretch to the horizon, with the Zugspitze visible on clear days. The summit cross is a classic photo spot. Due to the difficulty, proper equipment and good fitness are essential. Many hikers combine the climb with a stay at the nearby Hochalm or the Mittenwald hut.

Don't miss

  • Summit views encompassing the Karwendel, Wetterstein, and Zugspitze
  • Challenging via ferrata sections on the standard route
  • Alpine flora including edelweiss and gentian along the trail
  • Photo opportunity at the summit cross
  • Combining the hike with a stop at the Mittenwald Hut for refreshments
