The Oberau Tunnel is a key piece of railway heritage in Saxony. Built in the 1830s as part of the Leipzig–Dresden railway, it was one of the first long railway tunnels in Germany. Stretching over 500 meters, it cut through the hills near Meissen, enabling faster travel between the two cities. Today, it remains in use, carrying both passenger and freight trains. Visitors can view the tunnel portals from nearby walking paths, appreciating the stonework and the historical significance. The surrounding area offers views of trains emerging from the tunnel against a backdrop of green hills.
