The Great Mainz Jupiter Column (Große Mainzer Jupitersäule) is an impressive Roman stone column, reconstructed from original fragments and standing in the city center. Erected around 65 AD, it originally celebrated Roman military victories and honored Jupiter Optimus Maximus. The column is adorned with intricate reliefs depicting Roman gods, mythological scenes, and military symbols. Today, a full-scale replica stands near the Mainz Cathedral, while the original fragments are displayed in the Landesmuseum Mainz. Visitors can walk around the column, examining the detailed carvings up close. Informational panels provide context about Roman Mainz (Mogontiacum) and the column's significance. It's a must-see for history buffs and a striking piece of ancient art in a modern urban setting.
