The Scharnebeck twin ship lift is one of the largest boat lifts in the world, located about 10 kilometers north of Lüneburg. It raises and lowers ships up to 38 meters between the Elbe River and the Elbe-Seitenkanal, a vital waterway for cargo traffic. The lift consists of two parallel troughs, each capable of holding a ship of up to 1,350 tons. Visitors can watch the impressive operation from an observation platform, where the sheer scale of the structure becomes apparent. The lift operates continuously, and it's fascinating to see the precision with which ships are moved. The site also features a visitor center with exhibits on the canal's history and engineering, plus a café with views of the lift. It's a unique blend of industrial heritage and modern technology.
