The Historic Market Place (Historischer Marktplatz) is the heart of Hildesheim's old town, featuring a stunning ensemble of reconstructed half-timbered houses. The centerpiece is the Butchers' Guild Hall (Knochenhaueramtshaus), a richly decorated building from the 16th century that was rebuilt after WWII. Other notable buildings include the Town Hall (Rathaus) and the Wedekindhaus. The square is lined with cafes and restaurants, making it a lively spot. The cobblestone square hosts a weekly market and seasonal events. The reconstruction after WWII was meticulous, using original plans and materials to restore the medieval character. A visit offers a glimpse into the city's prosperous past as a Hanseatic trade center.
